Du 10 - 21 juin 2019
Galeries FOFA & VAV

Querencia (noun)
From querer to want, like, love (from Latin quaerere to seek, gain, obtain, ask). It represents a place or state of mind that provides a sense of refuge, security, and strength. It can be a physical location, a relationship, a memory, or even a feeling. Is the place where you feel most at home, most yourself, and most capable of facing the world.

Colombia, home to the greatest diversity of birds on Earth with over 1,969 species, has always been the backdrop of my earliest sensory memories. As a child, I often traveled with my family through its varied landscapes, each journey accompanied by the ever-present soundtrack of birdsong. On one such trip, at the age of eight, I brought along a Barbie-branded 16mm analog camera, The film remained undeveloped for decades, until 2018, when its grainy, faded frames revealed a blurred yet tender retrospecton of that distant moment.

These found images form the visual foundation of Querencia, an audiovisual installation that revisits this memory through layered sensory elements. A soundscape composed of dozens of Colombian bird calls envelops the viewer, creating an auditory impression of an afternoon spent in the fields of Antioquia. Through this immersive atmosphere, I seek to evoke a sense of innocence, belonging, and an intimate connection to the natural world.

in this installation are bird forms rendered in holographic film, which catch and reflect light onto the surrounding walls. These projections function like memories themselves. They are ephemeral, shifting, and glowing with the romanticism of a time long past. Querencia is both a return and a reverence: an ode to childhood, to place, and to the enduring presence of birdsongs and nature in the fabric of one’s earliest experiences.
